We started making shark lamps because nobody else was doing it right.
There were plastic versions, cheap imports, mass-produced "nautical" fixtures that looked tired the moment you hung them up. What didn't exist was a ceiling lamp in the shape of a manta ray — made from reclaimed wood, with real Maori-inspired detail — that could anchor an entire restaurant interior.
So we made one. Then another. Then a café in Ellenton, Florida ordered sharks, rays, and surfboard lamps for their entire space. And that changed how we think about what lighting actually does in a hospitality setting.
A lighting fixture is either furniture or wallpaper. There's no middle ground.
Walk into any restaurant and look up. Either the ceiling tells you something about where you are — or it doesn't. Generic pendant lamps in a coastal bar tell you nothing. A handcrafted hammerhead shark with light coming through its body tells you everything.

The Vampire Penguin café in Ellenton, Florida understood this. They didn't just hang some ocean-themed pieces on the wall. What we make — and what the material actually means
Our ocean creature lighting — sharks, manta rays, whales, octopus — is made from reclaimed wood. Because it's practical and durable.
The Maori-inspired patterns we carve into the forms aren't decorative filler. They reference a real visual tradition connected to ocean culture. When light passes through those carved sections and casts shadows on your ceiling — that's the moment guests stop talking and look up.
The HORECA reality: what you actually need to know before ordering
Restaurants and hotels have different requirements than private homes. Here's what matters:
Size and scale. A shark lamp that looks impressive in a photo might disappear in a double-height restaurant ceiling. We work from your space dimensions, not catalog sizes. Send us the room height and we'll tell you what works.
Electrical. All our fixtures ship with standard wiring and can be adapted to local requirements. For HORECA projects we provide technical documentation for your electrician.
Minimum order. One piece. But for projects — cafés, hotel lobbies, restaurant zones — we work differently. We discuss the space, propose a composition, and price the full scope. Usually 3+ pieces is where it starts making sense visually and economically.
Lead time. 3–6 weeks from confirmed order depending on complexity and volume. We send photos during production. No surprises.
The Ellenton project — what we actually did
Vampire Penguin is a dessert café chain with locations across the US. The Ellenton, Florida location came to us not for a single lamp — but for a complete interior environment.
We made all the dining tables — surfboard-shaped, with full-surface prints connected to the local Manatee County nature reserve. Turtles, manatees, flamingos. Each table a different story about the place the café sits in.
The ceiling lighting — shark, manta ray, and surfboard lamps — completes the atmosphere from above.
The result is a space where guests don't just sit and eat. They stay longer. They photograph. They share. The owner now uses it as a showroom for incoming franchise partners. That's what a thought-through interior does. It works for you after you've stopped paying for it.
