A few months back, a client from Arizona reached out with a challenge I'd never tackled before: he wanted a centerpiece chandelier for his new game room that combined his two passions—surfing and billiards. He sent me photos of his custom-built table, a gorgeous slate model with leather pockets, and asked if I could design a surfboard-shaped lamp that would hang directly above it. That conversation became the blueprint for what we now call the Surfboard Billiard & Dining LED Chandelier.
Building lighting for game rooms is different from dining spaces or hotel lobbies. The fixture has to deliver focused, shadow-free illumination across the entire playing surface while staying high enough that players don't whack their cues into it during overhead shots. In our workshop, we settled on a 72-inch length—long enough to mirror the proportions of a classic longboard but scaled to hover 32 to 36 inches above a regulation 8-foot table.

Our 72-inch surfboard chandelier positioned above a billiard table—marine-grade plywood core with reclaimed timber rails and dual LED strips.
Why Marine Plywood Works Better Than Solid Hardwood
When I first sketched this design, I considered using reclaimed oak planks for the entire body. Beautiful grain, authentic patina—but terrible for a ceiling fixture that spans six feet. Solid hardwood at that length warps unpredictably, especially in rooms with fluctuating humidity from air conditioning or coastal climates. One seasonal shift and your chandelier starts to twist like a propeller blade.
We switched to a marine-grade plywood core: nine layers cross-laminated with waterproof phenolic resin. It's the same material boat builders use for transom panels, which means it holds its geometry even when temperature and moisture swing wildly. For the visible rails and fin accents, I hand-select reclaimed timber—usually Douglas fir or teak salvaged from old dock pilings—and book-match the grain so the left and right sides mirror each other.
LED Strip Placement and Heat Dissipation
The Arizona client wanted bright, even light without visible hot spots. We embedded two parallel LED strips—5000K daylight-balanced—inside routed channels along the surfboard's underside. Each strip runs on a separate driver, so if one circuit fails (rare, but it happens), you still have half your illumination until the replacement arrives. The plywood acts as a natural heat sink, and we drill ventilation ports near the mounting bracket where warm air can rise into the ceiling cavity.
For billiard tables specifically, I recommend dimmable drivers. During a serious game, you want full brightness to see ball trajectories and pocket angles. But when the room shifts to cocktail mode or movie night, dialing down to 30 percent creates ambient glow without glare. We ship every chandelier with a wall-mounted dimmer that integrates with most smart home systems.
Real-World Install: Vampire Penguin Ellenton, Florida
One of our most photographed installations isn't a billiard room at all—it's the Vampire Penguin shaved ice café in Ellenton, Florida. The owner wanted sculptural lighting that reinforced the beach-meets-arctic theme without feeling like a tacky tiki bar. We fabricated three custom surfboard chandeliers in graduated lengths (60", 54", 48") and suspended them at staggered heights above the main counter.
What surprised us was how customers started using the fixtures as photo backdrops. The warm LED glow against the natural wood grain created an Instagram-worthy focal point, and the café's social engagement doubled in the first quarter after opening. That project taught me that sculptural lighting isn't just functional—it's part of your brand storytelling. Mounting Hardware and Weight Distribution
A 72-inch surfboard chandelier with dual LED strips weighs approximately 28 pounds. We include heavy-duty aircraft cable rated to 200 pounds and marine-grade stainless steel turnbuckles for height adjustment. The mounting plate bolts directly into a ceiling joist or cross-beam—never drywall anchors, even the toggle type. If your game room has a dropped ceiling with acoustic tiles, we provide a steel spreader bar that distributes load across three joists.
One common question: can you hang this fixture from a vaulted ceiling? Absolutely. We've installed surfboard lamps in A-frame cabins and loft conversions where the ceiling peaks at 18 feet. The key is using adjustable-length cables and positioning the dimmer switch at a reachable height, usually near the room entry or beside the light switch panel.
Custom Sizing for Non-Standard Tables
Not everyone plays on an 8-foot regulation table. We've built 84-inch chandeliers for 9-foot snooker tables and compact 60-inch versions for 7-foot bar-style setups. During the design consultation, I ask for three measurements: table length, ceiling height, and the distance from the table edge to the nearest wall. Those numbers determine the ideal fixture span and suspension length.
If you're working with an interior designer or architect, send me a scaled floor plan with the table position marked. I can generate a lighting layout that shows beam spread and ensures no shadows fall across the corner pockets. We also fabricate Manta Ray Sculptural Ceiling Lights and Shark Ocean Ceiling Chandeliers for clients who want ocean themes beyond the surfboard silhouette.
Finish Options and Maintenance
We seal every chandelier with three coats of marine-grade polyurethane. It's the same finish I use on Surfboard Shower Panels—completely waterproof and resistant to UV yellowing. Once a year, wipe the surface with a damp microfiber cloth and avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which can cloud the finish over time. If you're in a high-humidity climate (Florida, Gulf Coast, Hawaii), the plywood core and sealed edges prevent moisture intrusion indefinitely.
